F.A.Q.
Do you need an ultrasound?
Unlike X-rays, ultrasound does not use radiation.
Ultrasound can also show moving parts of the body, such as the beating heart and blood flowing through blood vessels.
What are diagnostic medical ultrasounds used for?
Diagnostic medical ultrasound can be used to:
– Determine if blood flows at a normal rate and level
– Determine if there is a problem with the structure of the heart
– Look for obstructions in the gallbladder
– Examine the thyroid for cancer or non-cancerous tumors
– Detect abnormalities in the abdomen and kidneys
– Guide a biopsy, a procedure in which a small tissue sample is removed for testing
Does this test have any risks?
They are considered safe during pregnancy.
What are the different kind of ultrasound?
Pregnancy ultrasound is used to examine the fetus. It provides information about the baby’s growth, development, and overall health.
Diagnostic medical ultrasound is used to view and gather information about internal parts of the body such as the heart, blood vessels, liver, bladder, kidneys, and female reproductive organs.
Alternative names: ultrasound, ultrasonography, pregnancy sonography, fetal ultrasound, obstetric sonography, diagnostic medical sonography, diagnostic medical ultrasound
What is pregnancy ultrasound used for?
Ultrasound during pregnancy is used to obtain information about the fetus’s health. It can be used to:
– Confirm pregnancy
– Verify the size and position of the fetus
– Check if you have a multiple pregnancy
– Estimate how far along you are in the pregnancy, also known as gestational age.
– Look for signs of Down syndrome, including thickening of the baby’s neck
– Look for birth defects in the brain, spinal cord, heart, and other parts of the body
– Check the amount of amniotic fluid.
=> The amniotic fluid is a clear fluid that surrounds the fetus during pregnancy. It protects it from external injuries and cold. It also contributes to lung development and bone growth.
Types of Ultrasound
To better understand when to use each type of ultrasound, let’s look at some specific cases for which each of these services is particularly suitable.
Gynecological Transvaginal Ultrasound (Non-pregnancy)
- Unexplained pelvic pain.
- Irregular or abnormal bleeding.
- Evaluation of ovarian cysts or fibroids.
- Check the health of female reproductive organs.
- Monitoring of specific gynecological treatments.
First Pregnancy Ultrasound (Transvaginal/Abdominal)
- Pregnancy confirmation.
- Determining gestational age.
- Checking the initial health of the embryo.
- Early detection of multiple pregnancies.
- Evaluation of embryo and placenta position in early stages.
Pregnancy Follow-up Ultrasound
- Monitoring of adequate fetal growth.
- Evaluation of fetal anatomy and detection of possible complications.
- Monitoring of amniotic fluid quantity.
- Verification of fetal position for childbirth preparation.
- Detection of the fetus’s general health throughout pregnancy.
Morphological Ultrasound
- Detailed detection of physical anomalies in the fetus.
- Comprehensive evaluation of fetal anatomy.
- Diagnosis of possible placental complications.
- Planning and preparation for possible fetal health conditions.
- Peace of mind and security for future parents about fetal development.
Did You Know?
THE PROCESS OF AN ULTRASOUND
During an ultrasound, the following usually occurs:
– The patient lies on a bed, with the part of the body where the examination will be performed uncovered.
– The healthcare professional spreads a special gel on the skin.
– The healthcare professional moves a transducer, a wand-like device, over that specific part of the body.
– The device sends sound waves through the body. The sound waves are so sharp that they cannot be heard.
– The waves are recorded and converted into images on a monitor.
– You may be able to see the images as they are being taken. This is what usually happens in a pregnancy ultrasound and allows you to see the fetus.
– When the examination is finished, the healthcare professional may clean the gel off your body.
– The overall process lasts between 10 and 20 minutes.
– In some cases, pregnancy ultrasound is done by inserting a transducer into the vagina. This is usually done early in pregnancy.
DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL ULTRASOUND FOR WOMEN
In women, diagnostic medical ultrasound can be used to:
– Examine a lump in the breast to see if it is cancer.
=> Although this type of cancer is much more common in women, this test can also be used to detect breast cancer in men.
– Determine the cause of pelvic pain
– Find the cause of abnormal menstrual bleeding
– Diagnose infertility or evaluate infertility treatments
In men, ultrasound can be used to diagnose prostate problems.
