What is Obstetrics and How Do We Support You During Pregnancy?

Obstetrics is the branch of medicine dedicated to the comprehensive care of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.

Our goal is to monitor the health of the mother and the baby’s development, prevent complications, and provide the support and information you need to experience this stage with peace of mind and confidence.

At Centro Médico Badal, we offer personalised, professional care tailored to your individual needs — from the confirmation of pregnancy through the weeks following birth.

When Should You Start Pregnancy Monitoring — and Why Is It So Important?

It’s essential to begin obstetric care as soon as you suspect or confirm your pregnancy.

The first visit helps us determine how far along you are, assess your overall health, identify any risk factors, and plan the necessary follow-up appointments. Regular monitoring is the best way to:

✔ Confirm your baby’s proper growth and development

✔ Detect any complications early (e.g. pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes)

✔ Monitor your physical and emotional wellbeing throughout the pregnancy

✔ Answer your questions and guide you toward a healthy pregnancy

✔ Provide reassurance and personalised care at every stage

Key Tips for a Healthy and Peaceful Pregnancy

Balanced Nutrition

Follow a diet rich in essential nutrients, and talk to your doctor about supplements like folic acid and iodine.

Moderate Physical Activity

Stay active with pregnancy-safe exercises like walking, swimming, or prenatal yoga — always under medical advice.

Be Alert to Warning Signs

Contact your doctor if you experience unusual symptoms such as bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or reduced foetal movements.

Stay Hydrated & Get Plenty of Rest

Drink enough water and prioritise good-quality sleep to support both your health and your baby’s development.

Avoid Harmful Substances

Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and other toxic substances. Ask your doctor which medications are safe during pregnancy.

Attend All Your Obstetric Appointments

Don’t skip your scheduled visits — they are essential for tracking progress and preventing potential problems.

Morphology Scan Icon

Week 20

Morphology Scan

Detailed ultrasound to check the baby's anatomy and rule out malformations.

O'Sullivan Test Icon

Weeks 24-28

O'Sullivan Test

Screening test to detect gestational diabetes. It involves measuring blood glucose levels after drinking a sugary solution.

A vaginal and rectal swab is taken to detect the presence of Streptococcus agalactiae (group B) bacteria, important for preventing newborn infections.

Growth Scan and Monitoring Icon

Week 36+

Growth Scan + Monitoring

Ultrasound to assess fetal growth and amniotic fluid levels. Monitoring (cardiotocography) records the fetal heart rate and uterine contractions.

Pregnancy monitoring is adapted to each stage, with specific tests and evaluations:

First Trimester (Up to week 12–14): Confirmation and dating of the pregnancy (early ultrasound), full blood tests (blood group, serologies, etc.), combined screening (Triple Screening) to assess the risk of chromosomal abnormalities.

Second Trimester (Up to week 27–28): Morphology ultrasound (around week 20) to evaluate detailed foetal anatomy, routine blood tests, O’Sullivan Test (screening for gestational diabetes).

Third Trimester (From week 28 until birth): Growth ultrasounds to assess foetal development and position, full pre-labour blood work, monitoring of foetal wellbeing (if needed), vaginal swab for Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Strep).

🩺 Detailed trimester-by-trimester monitoring is key to ensuring the health of both you and your baby.

Pregnancy & Testing Myths and Facts

Do frequent ultrasounds harm the baby?

False ❌

Ultrasound uses sound waves — not radiation. It is a completely safe, painless, and non-invasive technique that has been used for decades with no evidence of harm to mother or baby.

Does the Triple Screening test guarantee if something is wrong with my baby?

False ❌

Triple Screening is a risk assessment, not a diagnostic test. It estimates the likelihood (high or low) of certain abnormalities. A high risk suggests further diagnostic testing (like amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling), but it doesn’t confirm any condition on its own.

If I feel fine, can I skip some check-ups?

False ❌

Even if you feel great, regular visits are essential. They help monitor things that aren’t always visible — like blood pressure, foetal growth, infections, or gestational diabetes — and are key to preventing complications.

Should I eat for two during pregnancy?

False ❌

What matters is quality, not quantity. You only need a slight increase in calories — about 300 extra per day during the second and third trimesters. A balanced, nutrient-rich diet is what’s most important.

Can the shape of my belly predict my baby’s sex?

False ❌

The shape of your belly depends on factors like your muscle tone, baby’s position, and pelvic structure — not the baby’s sex. It’s a common myth with no scientific basis.

Can sex during pregnancy harm the baby?

False

In a healthy, uncomplicated pregnancy, sexual activity is safe. Your baby is well protected by the amniotic fluid and cervix. If you have any specific condition or concern, it’s always best to ask your doctor.

Is it normal to feel scared or anxious during pregnancy?

True

Absolutely. It’s completely normal to feel a mix of emotions — joy, excitement, but also fear and uncertainty. Talk openly about how you feel, whether with us, your partner, or your support network.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pregnancy Monitoring

1. I’m very nervous about the morphology scan — what if they find something?

It’s completely natural to feel anxious about this important ultrasound. Our team will explain everything clearly — before, during, and after the scan. If anything unusual is detected, we’ll inform you with sensitivity, explain your options, and refer you to specialised units if necessary. We’re here to support you.

2. Do pregnancy cravings mean I’m missing a specific nutrient (or the baby is)?

No — cravings are very common during pregnancy and are likely related to hormonal changes.
There’s no scientific evidence linking them to specific nutritional deficiencies. The most important thing is to maintain a varied and balanced diet.

3. How often should I attend pregnancy monitoring check-ups?

The usual schedule is monthly until around weeks 28–32, every two weeks until weeks 36–38, and weekly until birth. However, the exact frequency is personalised based on your needs and how your pregnancy is progressing.

4. Are all the recommended tests and blood work safe?

Yes — all standard obstetric tests (blood work, ultrasounds, Triple Screening, O’Sullivan Test) are completely safe for both you and your baby. They provide valuable information to help prevent or manage any potential complications.

5. Does the price of each visit always include an ultrasound?

As shown in our pricing list, we offer several types of visits. The basic Obstetric Visit does not include an ultrasound. Visits that do include an ultrasound are clearly specified:
Obstetric Visit + Transvaginal Ultrasound, Obstetric Visit + Follow-Up Ultrasound, and Obstetric Visit + Morphology Ultrasound.
Choose the one you need — or feel free to ask us!

6. I’m having a lot of discomfort (nausea, fatigue…). Can you help?

Absolutely. During check-ups, we don’t just monitor the baby — we also talk about how you’re feeling.
We can give you practical tips and advice to relieve common pregnancy symptoms, and ensure they aren’t signs of anything more serious.
